These courses are designed for English language teachers who are helping pilots / ATCO’s reach Operational Level 4 (and above). Course participants often include both native and non-native English speakers with varying levels of experience in teaching and aviation.
Plain English or Phraseology?
These courses focus on the teaching of “plain English” in an Aviation context, based on key language functions and domains, and NOT the teaching of RT/phraseology or technical terminology

Content:Introduction to Teaching Aviation EnglishTeaching PronunciationTeaching StructureTeaching VocabularyTeaching Fluency & InteractionsTeaching ComprehensionCourse Planning & DesignThe course covers a mixture of theory and practical work. Participants will:Learn about the ICAO language descriptors and what these mean for teachingSee some examples of practical activities to help learners in each of the six language areas (pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension & interactions).Listen to test performances to hear examples of what distinguish different ICAO levels and discuss how to help candidates improve across the six skills.See some of Mayflower College’s own in-house teaching materials in order to see the theory put into practice.Receive input from the session tutor and group work with other participants using Zoom breakout rooms.
