2 WEEK COURSES FOR SEAFARERS These courses are suitable for seafarers at STCW support, operational and managerial levels who are  aiming to improve their English language proficiency and are preparing  to demonstrate their ability  as required by current legislation. At the end of the course students have the option to take the International Maritime English Testing System test of English language proficiency (I.M.E.T.S).

HOURS

  50 hours tuition, Monday - Friday, 09:15h - 11:00h, 11:15h - 12:30h, 13:30h- 15:30h):   30 hours of General English in mixed- nationality classes   20 hours of Maritime English in mini- groups of 2-4 persons

FEES

Course (50 hours) - £849 IMETS test & certificate - £75 Host family accommodation - £250  (includes breakfast and dinner)



The skills to be practiced include: In a multinational group: o Pronunciation o Grammar o Fluency and interactions In a mini-group (2-4 seafarers: o Maritime Vocabulary o Maritime  Comprehension o Preparation for the I.M.E.T.S  examination



OBJECTIVES:

To develop the main language skills and cover the IMO’s recommended maritime English syllabus To practice the English language needed to work in the maritime industry

DESIGN:

The course has a strong emphasis on spoken English. It deals with specialist maritime vocabulary and practices these in a maritime context.  Each unit contains SCMPs and gives models of simulated radio exchanges. The objectives will be achieved by focusing primarily on speaking and listening skills (and not reading and writing skills).

TOPICS:

The topics for a typical programme will be:     WEEK 1            WEEK 2 Ship knowledge And Crew Medicine and Passenger care Getting underway Pilots and berthing Nautical charts and Navigation Meteorology On the bridge and In the engine room Cargo and Cargo damage reports Rules of the road and Distress IMETS – Test Preparation and Examination
