Who are these courses for?

These courses are designed for English language teachers who are helping pilots / ATCO’s reach Operational Level 4 (and above).

Plain English or Phraseology?

These courses focus on the teaching of “plain English” in an Aviation context, based on key language functions and domains, and NOT the teaching of RT/phraseology or technical terminology

Course content:

This will be a practical course and contain a series of workshops focusing on:

Documents:

  • Analysing key areas of ICAO document 9835 (“MANUAL OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ICAO LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS”) relating to best practices in Aviation English teaching and testing

  • A review of ICAO document Cir 318-AN/180 – “LANGUAGE TESTING CRITERIA FOR GLOBAL HARMONIZATION”

Published Materials

  • A review of published Aviation English teaching materials

  • A review of Climb Level 4 – an internet-based self-study programme

  • Blended learning - the advantages / disadvantages of self-study compared with classroom-based teaching

The Students

  • The motivation of language learners from the aviation community

  • Are aviation specialists different to other learners of English?

The Rating Scale

  • An introduction to the ICAO Rating scale

  • What does a Level 3 or Level 4 candidate sound like?

  • Benchmark Testing vs Licensing Testing

  • Designing a simple benchmark test

Developing Materials

  • Developing, designing and demonstrating materials to teach the key skill areas of listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary.

  • Key areas of vocabulary and grammar in Aviation English

  • Key language functions in Aviation English

Methodology

  • Introducing and analysing different aspects of language teaching practice, methodology and language teaching issues.

  • Teaching in a mono-lingual environment – techniques to encourage English language practice

Personal Development:

  • Encouraging teachers in their personal and professional development in a stimulating and motivating environment.

  • Providing a forum for discussion of themes and shared experiences

Based on group sizes of 8-12 persons the costs (per person) for the two-week programme will be:
